In the past, during the earliest occurrence of autism, it is almost impossible to get life insurance coverage for a person within the autism spectrum. But due to the continuing studies of autism and a better understanding of this disability, there has been an increase in the number of insurance companies willing to provide life insurance protection. Many of these autism-challenged individuals are now grown up, with some employment and living either independently or staying with parents. With the advent of life insurance with either a long-term care rider or a living benefit, having life insurance for persons with autism is very important, most especially for those parents who have very limited resources to leave behind to their offspring.
Insurance companies require submission of answers to some important questions to know more about the proposed insured. Among the questions asked are:
- The description of the autism: Asperger (IQ above 70; Mild: -(IQ 50-70); Moderate (IQ 35-49); Severe (poor motor development, minimal speech, etc.); Profound (IQ<20) none to minimal speech.
- History of seizure (either yes or no).
- Type of seizure.
- Symptoms experienced during seizure episodes.
- Frequency of seizure.
- Medications – Quantity taken and frequency.
